New Zealand Allocates $5 Million to Replace Century‑Old Bridge on Waikato Freight Route
WHY IT MATTERS
Replacing the aging bridge safeguards a vital freight link, protects regional commerce, and enhances safety for communities that rely on the route.
What happened
The New Zealand government has committed $5 million from the Regional Infrastructure Fund to replace the Piraunui Stream Bridge on State Highway 26, a key freight corridor in the Waikato region. Regional Development Minister Shane Jones and Transport Minister Chris Bishop highlighted that the bridge’s components are almost a century old and that early replacement will prevent future restrictions or closures.
Design and consenting work is slated to begin within the next six months, with construction expected to start in 2027, pending approvals and property arrangements.
The project aims to provide a safer, more resilient connection for road users, keep freight moving, and support economic growth in the region.
