Rivian Delays LiDAR R2 Rollout to Customers Until 2027, Employees Get Early Access

Rivian announced that its first R2 LiDAR units, paired with the in‑house RAP1 autonomy computer, will be shipped to employees before the end of 2026, while paying customers will not receive the system until 2027. The announcement, made at an investor conference in New York, also highlighted updates on point‑to‑point driving, the company’s Uber robotaxi partnership, and the fact that LiDAR now costs “a few hundred dollars.” The shift from earlier timelines suggests the automaker may be extending testing or addressing supply constraints. Early employee deployment will allow Rivian to refine the technology before a broader market release, but customers and partners will experience a delayed benefit from autonomous capabilities.
