Romania Names EU Lawmaker Siegfried Mureșan as New Prime Minister

Romanian President Nicușor Dan announced that European Parliament member Siegfried Mureșan will become the country’s next prime minister, marking the third attempt to resolve a political crisis that began in April. Mureșan, a long‑time MEP and vice‑president of the European People’s Party, accepted the nomination and said Romania needs a credible government as soon as possible. He has the backing of the National Liberal Party, Save Romania Union and the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania, but faces opposition from the Social Democratic Party and the far‑right Alliance for the Union of Romanians, who criticize his EU role.
