Russia Expands 'Foreign Agent' List, Targeting Ekho Editor and Others
WHY IT MATTERS
The expansion of Russia's 'foreign agent' list raises concerns about the country's increasing restrictions on independent media and its efforts to control the flow of information.
What happened
Russia's Justice Ministry has added several organizations and individuals to its list of 'foreign agents,' including Maxim Kurnikov, editor-in-chief of the news outlet Ekho. Ekho was previously designated a 'foreign agent' in July 2026. The list also includes Yelena Shuvalova, a former Moscow City Duma member, and several other organizations.
Ekho was founded abroad by former journalists from the radio station Ekho Moskvy. The designation is part of Russia's efforts to regulate and restrict the activities of organizations it deems to be foreign-influenced. The move is likely to be seen as an attempt to suppress independent media and limit the spread of information.
The International Union of German Culture, an association of nonprofit organizations, and Mavi Grupp LLC are also among those added to the list. The project 'BEYOND PROPAGANDA' and the project Prostranstvo Politika in Novosibirsk have also been designated as 'foreign agents. '
