Opposition Leader Ilya Yashin Cancels Armenia Visit Amid Threat Warning
WHY IT MATTERS
Yashin’s cancellation underscores the security risks faced by opposition figures abroad and signals the challenges of coordinating anti‑war protests during Russia’s State Duma elections.
What happened
Ilya Yashin, a Russian opposition politician based in the United States, announced on his Telegram channel that he will not travel to Yerevan on September 20, the final day of Russia’s State Duma elections. Yashin had planned to visit a polling station in Yerevan to join a large anti‑war line and meet fellow anti‑war Russians.
While in Washington, he received a warning about a physical threat that prompted him to cancel the trip and follow security protocols. He said he will still participate in the “Noon for a Peaceful Russia” protest, which he and other opposition figures proposed for the same day.
Yashin will attend the protest at a polling station near the Russian Embassy in New York at exactly noon on September 20.
