Senate Impeachment Trial of Vice President Duterte Postponed Until Oct. 5
WHY IT MATTERS
The postponement underscores the balance between confidentiality obligations and due‑process rights in high‑profile impeachment proceedings, affecting public confidence in the judicial system.
What happened
The Senate impeachment court halted proceedings in Vice President Sara Duterte’s trial on Thursday, October 1, after her defense requested a delay in the testimony of Anti‑Money Laundering Council (AMLC) Executive Director Ronel Buenaventura. The request was made because the defense received the witness’s confidential financial summaries only that morning and needs time to review the 23‑24 boxes of documents required for cross‑examination.
Senate presiding officer Francis “Chiz” Escudero granted the deferment, citing the need for equity and preparation. While some senators expressed reservations, others urged the court to accommodate the defense’s request.
The trial will resume on Monday, October 5, with Buenaventura expected to testify.
