What happened
South Korean company Satrec Initiative, a subsidiary of Hanwha Systems, has announced plans to develop 10‑centimeter‑class optical satellites that will augment the synthetic‑aperture‑radar (SAR) constellation launched by Hanwha in July. The optical payloads are intended to provide high‑resolution Earth imagery in the visible and near‑infrared spectrum, complementing the radar data already available from the SAR network.
By integrating optical and radar sensors on a single constellation, the partnership aims to deliver a more comprehensive set of observations for a range of applications, from land‑cover monitoring to maritime surveillance.
Development and integration work is underway, with the satellites slated for future launch as part of Hanwha’s expanded Earth‑observation program.
