A team of researchers has devised a novel technique to chart the density of Earth’s upper atmosphere, a region that has long eluded precise measurement. By harnessing orbital data from roughly 1,200 Starlink satellites, the scientists reconstructed variations in atmospheric density at an altitude of about 500 kilometers. The method relies on the subtle changes in the satellites’ orbits caused by the drag exerted by the tenuous air at that height.
The resulting density maps provide a more detailed view of the upper atmosphere than previously available. This enhanced understanding is expected to improve the accuracy of satellite trajectory predictions, which is critical for maintaining the safety of the increasingly crowded space environment.
With more accurate models of atmospheric drag, operators can better plan maneuvers, reduce collision risk, and extend the operational life of satellites.
