Seattle Times, Newsday File Copyright Lawsuit Against OpenAI and Microsoft

The Seattle Times and Newsday have joined a growing list of plaintiffs in a lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft, alleging that the AI company used their journalism as training data without permission and frequently reproduces passages from their reporting in responses to user queries. The suit also names Microsoft as a defendant because its Copilot product is built on OpenAI’s technology. The complaint follows similar legal actions by The New York Times, Ziff Davis, Merriam‑Webster, and Encyclopedia Britannica, and joins nearly 400 local newspapers that have recently sued the two tech firms over copyright concerns. The case is now pending in court, with both companies expected to defend their data‑usage practices.
