Flash Flood in Nepal’s Gorkha District Causes Extensive Damage, 10 Missing
WHY IT MATTERS
The flood threatens lives, livelihoods, and essential services, especially for women and girls, underscoring the urgent need for coordinated emergency response and climate resilience in Nepal.
What happened
A flash flood in Nepal’s Gorkha District, the second in six weeks, struck when a river blocked by a landslide burst. Early reports indicate more than 35 homes and six bridges were destroyed, cutting several communities off from essential services.
At least 10 people are missing and 125–150 people are directly affected. Thousands downstream remain on alert as flood risk stays high.
Women and girls are expected to suffer the greatest losses, with many losing homes, income, and access to safe water and toilets, increasing safety risks during recovery. CARE Nepal is monitoring the situation, coordinating with the government, local partners, and other aid groups, and is ready to deploy its CARE PACKAGE® for Emergencies if needed.
