Statistics Canada Launches Sector-Based Producer Price Indexes
WHY IT MATTERS
The new indexes give analysts a sector‑specific view of price changes, enhancing understanding of inflation and informing policy decisions.
What happened
Statistics Canada has released the first set of sector-based Producer Price Indexes, covering energy, non‑energy, goods and services sectors. The indexes use a methodology developed by the Bank of Canada and aim to capture price changes across these broad producer categories.
The data are intended to aid research and analysis of firms’ price‑setting behavior and inflation dynamics, and to support the development of economic models.
The release provides a new tool for economists and policymakers to track sectoral price movements.
