UN Security Team Celebrates Resilience Amid Sudan’s Ongoing Conflict and Budget Cuts
WHY IT MATTERS
Effective security coordination is essential for maintaining humanitarian access and protecting aid workers in Sudan’s volatile environment, ensuring that life‑saving assistance reaches vulnerable populations.
What happened
The United Nations Department of Safety and Security in Sudan marked the end of its third quarter of 2026 with a reflection on a year of adaptation and perseverance. Chief Security Adviser Kwadwo Opong‑Marfo noted that the pace of security challenges remained steady, yet the team’s ability to adjust to shifting front lines and two consecutive years of budget cuts proved decisive.
The report highlighted successful humanitarian access, improved preparedness, and enhanced analytical capabilities, as well as a pilot project funded by the Sudan Humanitarian Fund that tested new community engagement and data‑collection methods.
The quarter also welcomed James Humphreys as the new Deputy Security Adviser, while expressing gratitude to partners such as the Humanitarian Coordinator, WFP Country Director, and Plan International Sudan for their support.
