New Zealand Launches Self‑Certification Scheme for Plumbers and Drainlayers

The government opened a self‑certification scheme for plumbing and drainlaying work on 7 September, and more than 60 tradespeople were approved in the first week. The scheme allows qualified plumbers and drainlayers to certify a wide range of residential, commercial and rural wastewater work without a council inspection. Minister Simon Watts said the process can save up to four days and $1,600 per build, translating into an estimated $64 million in annual savings for the housing sector alone. Only experienced practitioners who meet strict eligibility criteria—technical competence, liability arrangements and quality assurance—may participate. The Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board will oversee applications, audit compliance and enforce standards, ensuring that the benefits of faster, cheaper construction are delivered safely.
