Senegal: Rising Irregular Migration to Canary Islands
WHY IT MATTERS
This trend highlights the need for continued monitoring and evidence-based interventions to address the increasing irregular migration to the Canary Islands.
What happened
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) Senegal has been monitoring the main departure points along the Senegalese coast since 2019. The Departure Monitoring Tool (DAMT) tracks relevant events reported by community focal points, providing information on migrant profiles, movement patterns, and associated risks.
This data supports evidence-based interventions. During the period of December 2025 to January 2026, 11 events were reported by community focal points.
Two boat departures and three observed pirogues in high seas were recorded, involving a total of 801 migrants. Additionally, 939 migrants were involved in departure preparations, and three cases of recruitment and two cases of migrant interception were reported.
