New Zealand to Strengthen SH50 Ngaruroro River Bridge to Lift Restrictions

A contract has been signed to strengthen the State Highway 50 (SH50) Ngaruroro River Bridge south of Fernhill, a move that will lift the current weight and speed restrictions that have been in place since October 2022. Transport Minister Chris Bishop said the 80‑year‑old bridge, which carries about 7,000 vehicles a day, will be upgraded by Downer at a cost of $5 million to $10 million. Work is slated to start in October and finish next year, after the NZ Transport Agency finalises consents and sets up site offices. Once completed, the bridge will support High‑Productivity Motor Vehicles and 50MAX freight configurations, restoring full freight capacity and improving safety for local businesses, emergency services and commuters.
