New Zealand Simplifies Food Safety Regulations, Focuses on Risk
WHY IT MATTERS
The changes aim to cut red tape, making it easier for businesses to comply while maintaining high food safety standards, benefiting producers and consumers alike.
What happened
The New Zealand Government has opened consultation on a revised Simply Safe & Suitable food control plan template, aiming to reduce paperwork and sharpen risk focus for food businesses. The updated template will feature a modular design that businesses can tailor to their operations, fewer testing and record‑keeping requirements, and clearer links between hazards, monitoring, record keeping and corrective actions.
It also removes duplication, uses simpler language, and reflects businesses’ responsibilities under the Food Act. Recent reforms include free online Food Safety Basics training, streamlined verification for multi‑site operators, exemption of exporters meeting foreign standards, reduced sampling for small meat processors, and revised registration for home‑based cake makers.
The government plans to replace periodic renewals with ongoing registration by mid‑next year. Consultation closes 15 November 2026.
