SpaceX Delivers Unusual Cargo to ISS, Including Brain Models, 3D Heart Tissue, and Space‑Made Retinas
WHY IT MATTERS
The cargo expands ISS research into medical and materials science, potentially leading to breakthroughs in brain disease treatment, vision restoration, and new glass technologies, while enhancing station power capacity.
What happened
SpaceX’s latest cargo delivery to the International Space Station carried a diverse array of scientific payloads. Among the items were miniature brain models, engineered 3D heart tissue, and technology designed to produce artificial retinas in microgravity.
The shipment also contained materials for creating unconventional glass under near‑weightless conditions and the station’s final upgraded solar arrays. Scientists view these experiments as a potential gateway to new treatments for severe brain disorders, vision restoration therapies, and the testing of future medicines in space.
The addition of upgraded solar arrays will also improve the ISS’s power generation capacity for ongoing research missions.
