Blizzard Announces 2030 Release of StarCraft as Open‑World Shooter
WHY IT MATTERS
The shift to an open‑world shooter expands StarCraft’s reach into a popular genre, potentially attracting new players while redefining the franchise’s future direction for the next decade.
What happened
Blizzard revealed at BlizzCon that the StarCraft franchise will return in 2030, this time as an open‑world shooter rather than a top‑down real‑time strategy game. The company’s VP Dan Hay explained that the project, originally conceived as StarCraft: Ghost in 2002, had languished in development hell and was officially canceled in 2014.
After more than a decade of dormancy, Blizzard is restarting the effort under the simple title StarCraft. Hay presented a cinematic trailer that showcases the new gameplay direction and confirms the 2030 launch window.
The announcement marks a significant pivot for the iconic franchise, moving it into the contemporary shooter market.
