SpaceX Secures Low‑Band Spectrum to Expand Starlink Mobile
WHY IT MATTERS
The spectrum acquisition and satellite approval enable SpaceX to offer nationwide mobile coverage, potentially reshaping the U.S. telecom landscape by adding a new, satellite‑backed competitor to established carriers.
What happened
SpaceX has acquired up to 14 MHz of 800 MHz low‑band spectrum from Grain Management, which originally purchased the licenses from T‑Mobile after its 2020 Sprint acquisition. The spectrum, mandated to be sold under a U.
S. government merger condition, will fill a critical technical gap for the company’s planned terrestrial mobile network that will complement its Starlink satellite service.
The deal comes as SpaceX also received federal approval to launch an additional 15,000 satellites for an upgraded mobile service, positioning the company to compete directly with major carriers such as AT&T, T‑Mobile, and Verizon.
