New Zealand Fast‑Tracks Port of Tauranga Expansion

The Stella Passage Development, the 34th project approved through New Zealand’s Fast‑track process, received final approval from Infrastructure Minister Chris Bishop and Regional Development Minister Shane Jones. Port of Tauranga Limited lodged its application in January 2026; an independent expert panel delivered a decision in about five months. The redevelopment will extend the Sulphur Point and Mount Maunganui wharves by more than 300 metres, install new container cranes on Sulphur Point, and dredge Stella Passage to give vessels sufficient clearance. The project is expected to almost double the port’s handling capacity, enabling larger ships and easing current congestion. The port already processes roughly a third of New Zealand’s cargo, so the expansion will improve the movement of imports and exports and deliver significant economic benefits for the region and the country.
