Syria Launches Disaster Preparedness Project with European Funding
WHY IT MATTERS
This project aims to protect food security and agricultural livelihoods in Syria, particularly for farming communities, by investing in preparedness and early warning systems, which can help communities act before shocks become crises and reduce future humanitarian needs.
What happened
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has launched a new project in Syria, funded by the European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO), to strengthen disaster preparedness and reduce humanitarian risks. The project focuses on enhancing multi-hazard early warning systems, risk analysis, and anticipatory action.
Representatives from government ministries, humanitarian organizations, and technical partners attended the launch event. The project aims to strengthen institutional capacities and support coordinated preparedness and response efforts.
The consortium will work with the Ministry of Emergency and Disaster Management to reinforce nationally led disaster risk management systems and translate risk information into practical measures at the governorate and community levels. The project's initial phase consists of four essential milestones to be completed by 30 January 2027, including risk knowledge and multi-hazard early warning systems, governance and coordination, local preparedness, and anticipatory action and crisis modifier.
