Undersea Cable Cut Between Philippines and Singapore Causes Nationwide Internet Slowdowns
WHY IT MATTERS
The outage highlights the vulnerability of international data routes and the importance of multiple cable paths to maintain reliable internet connectivity for consumers and businesses.
What happened
On Friday, October 2, a segment of the submarine cable linking the Philippines to Singapore went offline, disrupting internet services for several telecommunications providers. PLDT reported that the cut affected nationwide connectivity but had rerouted most traffic and expected normal service soon.
Converge ICT Solutions also redirected traffic to other submarine cables and continued monitoring connections to Singapore‑hosted apps and websites. Globe warned customers of potential slow mobile and broadband access while working to restore service.
The UP Diliman Network Helpdesk issued an advisory noting that the outage could increase latency and cause intermittent performance, especially when accessing overseas-hosted sites. While users may still retain internet access, they may experience slower loading, higher ping, video buffering, and intermittent connections as traffic is rerouted.
