Sudan Faces Widespread Emergency Food Crisis Amid Conflict and Drought, Risk of Famine in Key Regions

Emergency food insecurity (IPC Phase 4) will persist through the lean season across Greater Darfur, Greater Kordofan, and Blue Nile, driven by armed conflict, falling purchasing power, and soaring food and fuel prices. Catastrophic (IPC Phase 5) outcomes are already recorded in Um Baru, Kernoi, At‑Tiné, Dilling, Kadugli, and surrounding rural areas, as well as among internally displaced populations in Greater Darfur and Greater Kordofan. Humanitarian food assistance reaches only less than 20 % of the estimated population in need, even in camps such as Tawila and Jebal Marrahs. The harvest season (October‑January) is expected to be marginal at best because of El Niño‑driven drought and ongoing front‑line disruptions, creating a credible famine risk in seven northwestern and central North Darfur districts and in Dilling and Kadugli. If conflict escalates or sieges isolate communities for extended periods, the already extreme malnutrition could trigger widespread famine and elevated mortality.
