Suriname Unveils Country Cooperation Strategy to Strengthen Public Health
WHY IT MATTERS
The strategy aims to ensure measurable, inclusive, and sustainable health gains for all people in Suriname, with a focus on reducing inequities and strengthening the country's health workforce.
What happened
Suriname has launched a five-year plan to improve its public health system, addressing emerging risks and consolidating gains. The Country Cooperation Strategy 2026-2030 aims to create a more equitable, resilient, and people-centered health system.
Developed in partnership with the Pan American Health Organization and the World Health Organization, the strategy focuses on four key priorities: leadership and governance, people-centered primary health care, disease prevention and elimination, and enhanced capacity to respond to health emergencies and climate threats. The plan acknowledges the country's growing burden of noncommunicable diseases, maternal and neonatal health risks, and mental health challenges, while also recognizing its achievements in malaria-free certification, digital health innovation, and emergency preparedness.
Strong governance, data-driven decision-making, and multisectoral collaboration are seen as crucial to sustained progress.
