What happened
New Zealand's Oceans and Fisheries Minister Shane Jones has announced a reduction in commercial catch limits for tarakihi stocks to promote their recovery. The measures include a 20% reduction in the eastern tarakihi fishery, a 55% reduction in the western fishery, and a nationwide recreational daily limit of 10 tarakihi per person.
The changes aim to reduce fishing pressure and put tarakihi stocks on a more positive trajectory.
Minister Jones will closely monitor the fisheries and review tarakihi stocks again next year, with a new scientific stock assessment of east coast tarakihi planned for 2027 and an updated assessment for the west coast stock in 2028.
