Tasman SH60 Intersection Upgrade Design Begins Amid Safety Concerns
WHY IT MATTERS
Improving this key freight and tourism corridor will reduce crashes, support local businesses, and align with national transport funding priorities.
What happened
Tasman’s busy SH60 intersection near Richmond is set for a major safety upgrade after community concerns over frequent crashes. Since 2021, the junction of Appleby Highway, Pugh Road and McShane Road has recorded 22 accidents, most involving crossing or turning movements.
The intersection handles roughly 12,000 vehicles daily and sits beside a popular retail and hospitality hub. New Zealand Transport Agency and its WSP‑Stantec consultants are now drafting design plans in partnership with Tasman District Council, local landowners, residents and businesses.
Once design is finalized, funding will be sought in the 2027‑30 National Land Transport Programme. The work follows a $20 million Budget 2026 investment to boost SH620 resilience and a record $479 million South Island transport package.
