Chad Cholera Epidemic Worsens, 867 Cases and 42 Deaths Reported

The cholera epidemic in Chad continues to pose a significant threat to public health, with 867 cases and 42 deaths reported as of September 7, 2026. The province of Lac remains the epicenter of the outbreak, accounting for 61% of the national cases. The districts of Kouloudia, Bol, Liwa, and Kangalom are the main transmission areas, with Kouloudia experiencing a particularly high mortality rate of over 12%. The government, with the support of the World Health Organization and other humanitarian partners, has implemented various interventions, including vaccination campaigns, surveillance, and water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) activities. However, the response is hindered by challenges such as inadequate water supply and sanitation infrastructure, shortages of medical supplies and WASH materials, and a lack of healthcare personnel in some areas.
