What happened
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has announced a 30-day extension of the public comment period for a proposed rule amending its general exemption regulations. The extension was requested by the Alliance for Automotive Innovation (Auto Innovators).
The original comment period was scheduled to end on August 31, 2026, but will now close on September 30, 2026. The proposed rule aims to remove language limiting the application of temporary exemptions from Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) and the bumper standard.
It also removes the requirement for submitting exemption applications in three copies and specifies an electronic means for submission.
