WFP Calls for Stronger Social Protection to Shield Asia-Pacific Food Security
WHY IT MATTERS
Strengthening social protection can prevent temporary shocks from becoming lasting setbacks, safeguarding food security and development gains across Asia‑Pacific.
What happened
WFP urged investment in national social protection systems during Asia-Pacific Social Protection Week in Manila, 6‑8 Oct. The agency highlighted how inclusive, nutrition‑sensitive programs can shield families from floods, droughts, and sudden economic shocks, especially amid an unprecedented El Niño that threatens to worsen food insecurity.
WFP will showcase its experience supporting 16 governments, stressing the need for efficient, financially sustainable systems that can expand quickly during crises.
The organization frames stronger social protection not only as a crisis response but as an investment in food security, resilience, and long‑term development across the region.
