Greek Designer Myrsini Vardopoulou Shortlisted to Design Next Euro Banknotes

Myrsini Vardopoulou, a Greek graphic designer who has produced more than 250 postage stamps for Hellenic Post, is one of ten finalists for the European Central Bank’s new euro series. Her proposal, Design E, is slated for the €20 note and features Marie Curie, the pioneering physicist and chemist. The shortlist is split between two themes: European culture, highlighted by figures such as Maria Callas and Ludwig van Beethoven, and nature, represented by rivers and birds. Design E distinguishes itself by celebrating the work of individuals rather than their fame, using a circular visual language to emphasize ideas, knowledge and cultural convergence. Citizens across the euro area can vote online until September 21, after which the ECB’s governing council will decide by year‑end. If chosen, Vardopoulou’s design will appear on banknotes used by millions, symbolising shared European values amid discussions of a digital euro.
