What happened
Vasquez Rocks in Southern California are a popular filming location due to their unique, tilted rock formations. The rocks were formed 25 million years ago when sediment was spread across alluvial fans, which were later buried and cemented into layers of sandstone and conglomerate rock.
Tectonic activity led to the uplift and deformation of the Soledad Basin, causing the sedimentary layers to tilt, fold, and rotate. Weathering and erosion sculpted the formations further, leaving the more resistant sandstone and conglomerate fins and ridges that visitors see today.
The Vasquez Rocks have been featured in numerous films and television shows, including the Star Trek franchise, Westworld, and Battlestar Galactica.
