What happened
Alain Goriely of the University of Oxford has shown that the long‑standing claim that the Parthenon was built with curved lines to counteract visual distortions is unfounded. Goriely examined twelve proposed optical corrections—such as the upward curve of horizontal elements, the slight bulge of columns, and the thicker corner columns—and found that they are either unsupported by evidence or too small to affect a viewer’s perception under normal conditions.
He calculated that the building’s curvature would not create the sagging or pinching effects often cited. Instead, the curves likely served practical purposes: aiding water drainage from the stylobate and entablature, and providing structural stability to the columns.
The study, published in Royal Society Open Science, clarifies that the Parthenon’s design reflects engineering and aesthetic choices rather than a sophisticated optical trick.
