What happened
On World News Day, Rappler announced that its annual Rappler+ members will now have full digital access to the archives of Newsbreak, the award‑winning investigative magazine that launched in 2001. Newsbreak, founded at the cusp of the EDSA II People Power revolution, has long scrutinized power, exposing corruption in the Catholic Church, the 2004 presidential elections, the military’s comptroller mafia, and the judiciary.
Its team later partnered with ABS‑CBN and helped launch Rappler in 2011, with several former Newsbreak editors now holding senior roles at Rappler.
By opening the archives, Rappler aims to preserve journalism that mattered then and to give readers a historical lens on today’s controversies, helping them make sense of current chaos.
