US Food for Peace Program Supplies 21,000 Guatemalan Families Amid El Niño Drought
WHY IT MATTERS
The aid directly tackles rising acute food insecurity, helps prevent malnutrition, and builds resilience against future climate‑related shocks in vulnerable Guatemalan communities.
What happened
The World Food Programme, backed by the U. S. Department of Agriculture’s Food for Peace initiative, has delivered a new shipment of staple foods to Guatemala.
The aid targets more than 21,000 families in Huehuetenango, Quiché, Alta Verapaz, Izabal and Chiquimula, where the El Niño‑induced drought has heightened food insecurity. Each kit contains fortified rice, black beans, vegetable oil and supplementary fortified food designed to meet immediate nutrition needs and curb malnutrition.
The distribution is coordinated with Guatemala’s ministries of Agriculture, Social Development, Food and Nutrition Security and Disaster Reduction to ensure efficient, transparent delivery and avoid overlap with other programs. This partnership aims to strengthen community resilience and reduce the likelihood of negative coping strategies during the crisis.
