Cyprus and China Use Theatre to Bridge Cultures

Cyprus and China are using theatre to cross cultural borders, with high‑definition live‑screenings and international exchanges bringing new works to audiences in both countries. In China, the Beijing People’s Art Theatre streamed Rickshaw Boy to 6,000 university students, while the National Theatre of China and the National Center for the Performing Arts have released HD recordings of classic productions. Cyprus’s Theatre Organisation (Thoc) has screened Shakespeare’s Hamlet and Stanley Kubrick’s Dr Strangelove in local cinemas, and plans to stage Murder on the Orient Express, Wuthering Heights and The Seagull. Both sides see theatre as a diplomatic tool that lets audiences experience other cultures, fostering empathy and artistic collaboration.
