Three Die from Malaria After Mosquito Trapped on Flight to Germany

A rare outbreak of malaria has claimed three lives in Germany after an infected mosquito was found aboard a flight to Frankfurt. The victims, all residents of the Schwanheim area north of the airport, had never travelled to a malaria‑endemic region. The first death occurred in August when an airport worker contracted the disease; a second fatality followed, and the most recent victim died after being hospitalized. Health officials confirmed that the parasite Plasmodium falciparum was responsible. Between July 4 and July 6, six airport employees tested positive, prompting Fraport to deploy mosquito traps around the airport and issue health advisories. The German Robert Koch Institute has urged all staff to seek medical attention if symptoms appear.
