Utah Launches Pilot for AI-Generated Acne Prescriptions
WHY IT MATTERS
It signals a new era where AI can prescribe medication, prompting scrutiny of safety, oversight, and the evolving role of clinicians in automated healthcare.
What happened
Utah residents can now use the Nolla Health app to scan their faces and receive an AI‑generated prescription for acne treatment. The startup’s system analyzes acne severity and writes a prescription, which is then reviewed by two physicians before being issued.
The pilot program will begin with 100 patients, each prescription requiring dual physician approval. After 500 patients, the company will shift to a sampling model, with physicians reviewing at least 10% of prescriptions.
This rollout follows an earlier Bloomberg report and represents a first‑of‑its‑kind approach to automated prescription writing in a regulated state setting.
