EU Focuses on Regulating Key Unhealthy Ingredients to Tackle Chronic Diseases
WHY IT MATTERS
Regulating unhealthy ingredients and introducing taxes on sugary drinks could be key in reducing chronic diseases and obesity rates in Europe, particularly among children.
What happened
The European Union is shifting its focus to regulating key unhealthy ingredients such as sugar, salt, alcohol, and tobacco to combat chronic diseases. Johannes Pleiner-Duxneuner, managing director of the Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety, suggests that governments should keep the debate simple and target these main killers.
The EU is also considering introducing a sugary drink tax, with Austria's neighbor Germany planning to introduce a new tax starting in 2027.
Educational programs targeting children, starting as early as kindergarten, are also seen as crucial in reducing sugar consumption.
