US DOJ Joins Elon Musk in Challenge to EU Fine on X

The U. S. Department of Justice announced it will intervene in Elon Musk’s appeal against a €120 million fine imposed by the European Commission on Musk’s social media platform X. The fine, part of Brussels’ broader effort to regulate U. S. tech firms, was issued despite X having no significant presence or operations within the EU. The DOJ’s application to join the appeal will be heard at the EU General Court in Luxembourg, where Musk and X are seeking annulment of the penalty. Assistant Attorney General Brett Shumate criticized the Commission’s attempt to extend its regulatory authority beyond its jurisdiction, arguing it overreached in targeting an American company not operating in the EU.
