Trump Secures Majority Control of Venezuela's 65 Billion Barrel Oil Reserves
WHY IT MATTERS
The deal gives the U.S. a controlling stake in a major energy reserve, potentially reshaping regional energy dynamics and influencing global oil markets.
What happened
President Donald Trump announced a new agreement with Venezuelan President Nicolás Rodríguez that places the United States in majority control of 65 billion barrels of proven petroleum reserves in Venezuela. The deal, described by both leaders as historic, grants Washington a controlling stake in the country’s largest oil fields. The agreement follows years of stalled negotiations and sanctions that limited U.
S. access to Venezuelan oil. Under the terms, the United States will oversee exploration and production activities, while Venezuela retains a minority share.
The arrangement is expected to open the Venezuelan market to U. S. investment and could alter the balance of power in the region’s energy sector.
