TSA Pulls Back Gateside Program Expansion, Keeps 13 Airports on Hold
WHY IT MATTERS
The pause signals uncertainty in TSA’s gate‑pass policy, affecting family members who previously could accompany loved ones without tickets. Travelers should verify airport participation before planning visits.
What happened
In September, the Transportation Security Administration launched the Gateside by TSA PreCheck pilot, letting members escort non‑travelers through security at 13 airports. Weeks later, the program quietly expanded to roughly 300 airports, but that rollout has now been retracted.
The TSA’s application portal lists only the original 13 sites, and officials have said the expansion is on hold indefinitely. A Norfolk Airport Authority representative confirmed the pause, though TSA has not explained the reason.
The agency still promises additional airports will join in the coming months. Travelers can still use Gateside at the 13 airports, but non‑passengers must use the main checkpoint elsewhere.
