Turkey Calls Greece’s Aegean Island Militarization a Security Threat

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said on Tuesday that Ankara views Greece’s militarization of several Aegean islands as a security threat. Speaking during a visit to Azerbaijan, Fidan accused Greece of breaching international treaties by stationing troops on islands that are demilitarized under existing agreements. He warned that such actions could destabilise the region and urged Greece to fulfil its treaty obligations “in a more mature manner.” The comments come amid a flare‑up in Greek‑Turkish tensions, sparked by Greece’s deepening ties with Israel and a Greek complaint over Turkey’s declaration of national marine parks that extend into Greek‑claimed waters. Both sides remain NATO allies, but the dispute over maritime boundaries, continental shelves and the Cyprus issue continues to strain relations.
