K‑Pet Strike Ends as Company Reverses Layoffs
WHY IT MATTERS
The resolution ensures continued fuel supply for both communities and underscores the importance of fair labor practices in a region where fuel prices and cross‑community usage are sensitive.
What happened
Workers at Cyprus Turkish Petroleum (K‑Pet) ended a strike on Saturday after the company reversed its decision to lay off nine employees. Negotiations between the fuel‑workers union Petrol‑Is, part of the Dev‑Is federation, and K‑Pet led to the workers remaining on the payroll and being reassigned.
The move followed criticism from the Turkish‑Cypriot labour minister, Oguzhan Hasipoglu, who said the termination notices were improper and that the company was profitable enough to keep the staff. K‑Pet confirmed that fuel supply to its petrol stations would resume on Sunday.
The dispute had raised concerns about fuel availability, especially as Greek‑Cypriot drivers increasingly use Turkish‑Cypriot stations amid rising prices in the Republic of Cyprus.
