Turkish Cypriots Unveil Plans for 8,000‑Seat Nicosia Football Stadium
WHY IT MATTERS
The new stadium will provide Turkish Cypriot athletes with a compliant, multi‑purpose facility that could improve training, competition, and international representation, addressing longstanding barriers to participation.
What happened
Turkish Cypriot authorities announced on Saturday that they will build a new football stadium on the site of the current Ataturk Stadium in Nicosia’s Gocmenkoy suburb. The complex will seat 8,000 spectators, include 25 VIP boxes, and offer parking for about 700 cars.
Prime Minister Unal Ustel said the venue will meet UEFA’s Category 4 standards and will house modern indoor training facilities, changing rooms, medical suites, media infrastructure, and offices for local sports federations. Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz described the project as a “living stadium” that will operate year‑round, incorporate solar panels and rainwater harvesting, and serve as a safe gathering area during emergencies.
The announcement follows Turkish Cypriot teams’ recent success in the ConIFA European championship and their ongoing efforts to secure international competition opportunities for their athletes.
