Uganda's Karamoja Region Faces Acute Food Insecurity and Malnutrition

The deteriorating situation in Karamoja highlights the urgent need for increased humanitarian assistance and support to vulnerable households, particularly in the face of reduced aid levels and heightened disease outbreaks risk due to flash floods and El Niño-induced rains.
What happened
A recent IPC analysis reveals that El Niño-induced dry spells have led to extreme crop and pasture losses in Uganda, driving high levels of acute food insecurity and malnutrition in the Karamoja region and among vulnerable populations. The situation is exacerbated by rising food prices, limited income opportunities, and localised conflicts.
Approximately 465,900 children and 246,300 pregnant and breastfeeding women are suffering or expected to suffer from acute malnutrition, with Karamoja accounting for 33 percent of the overall malnourished children.
The region is projected to deteriorate further, with acute malnutrition expected to worsen due to total crop failure and failed second season harvests.
