Ukraine MHPSS Capacity Needs Assessment Reveals Key Gaps
WHY IT MATTERS
The findings of this assessment will inform the development of targeted capacity-building initiatives to address the mental health and psychosocial support needs of survivors of gender-based violence in Ukraine.
What happened
A recent assessment in Ukraine has identified significant capacity gaps in mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) services. The assessment, conducted by UN OCHA, found that 41% of respondents reported a lack of clinical/therapeutic skills, while 38% cited working with specific groups and staff care/burnout/vicarious trauma as major gaps. Supervision of MHPSS staff was also identified as a capacity gap by 33% of respondents.
The most requested training topics included complex trauma, trauma-focused therapeutic approaches, and group-based interventions. Respondents preferred interactive and sustained learning formats, with 62% selecting training/workshops and 51% preferring hybrid delivery.
The assessment also highlighted a need for LGBTQ+ inclusive practice, stronger inter-agency referral mechanisms, and tailored approaches for Roma communities and frontline populations. The majority of respondents (79%) expressed interest in further GBV-sensitive MHPSS capacity strengthening.
