Belgium's Asylum System Strains Under Refugee Influx

What happened
Belgium's asylum system continues to face significant challenges, with thousands of asylum-seekers left without adequate reception conditions. According to the Immigration Office, the country received 34,439 applications for international protection in 2025, a 13 per cent decrease from the previous year.
However, the total recognition rate at first instance stands at 30 per cent. Meanwhile, 8,157 people were granted temporary protection between January and November 2025, bringing the total number of beneficiaries to 99,963.
The reception system remains overstrained, with many asylum-seekers forced to squat or sleep on the streets. UNHCR continues to call for improved reception conditions, citing the need to uphold international protection standards.
