What happened
UNHCR announced that 681,612 Syrians known to the agency have returned to Syria and have been inactivated from its records. 87 % (591,396) left spontaneously, while 11 % (65,500) returned under duress in late 2024 and remained in Syria.
19 % (112,372) were identified by the Lebanese General Security Office while crossing an official point without a repatriation form, and 6 % (35,903) were classified as returning due to force majeure after 2 March 2026. The remaining 64 % (377,621) were inactivated because of prolonged absence, loss of contact, or confirmed by UNHCR through family interviews.
The inactivation reflects the completion of a presence‑verification exercise and marks a significant shift in the agency’s refugee caseload in the region.
