What happened
Morocco has become a crucial country of asylum, serving as a protection and inclusion space for migrants and refugees. The country's role has been solidified by its proximity to Mediterranean and Atlantic migration routes, as well as regional instability, including the conflict in Sudan.
As of June 30, 2026, the UNHCR registered 23,615 individuals, with 68% being Sudanese nationals. This sharp increase in arrivals from Sudan has led to heightened protection risks, particularly for unaccompanied children, who accounted for one in nine newly registered individuals.
The UNHCR operates through a branch office in Rabat and five decentralized Protection Antennas, providing access to registration, documentation, counseling, and protection services across key regions.
