Romania Supports Refugees through UNHCR Initiatives

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is working with the Romanian government to support refugees through various initiatives. In 2025, UNHCR enrolled over 2,275 refugees for cash assistance and distributed 190,295 core relief items, including blankets, bedding, clothing, and hygiene kits to 46,580 people in need. UNHCR also provided over 11,800 refugees with information and counselling in person or by phone, and reached nearly 80,000 refugees through social media channels. The RomExpo Community Centre in Bucharest serves as a main 'one-stop shop' for refugees, hosting over 250 refugees daily. The centre is run by UNHCR and partners, including national authorities and the Municipality of Bucharest, which operates a social shop. Romania granted access to social benefits for refugees from Ukraine through the Emergency Ordinance No. 96 in June 2024, addressing the needs of vulnerable refugees.
